The Real Problem
Most writers are waiting for a flood.
The big launch.
The viral post.
The book that finally breaks and carries the rest of the career on its back.
And while they wait, they measure themselves against everyone who looks like they already got theirs, and they feel behind.
*sigh*
I spent a chunk of my life on that hill.
It absolutely, unequivocally, sucked.
Let me tell you what I learned.
The flood is not a plan.
It is a wish with a scoreboard attached.
A real living does not arrive all at once. It doesn’t come from beating another author, either. It comes from something much smaller and much more in your control.
The great part is once you see it you cannot unsee it.
When people ask how I have raised a family on my writing, they expect some big number.
Monumental sales.
Massive book signings.
…and I just laugh.
I’m sitting here, at my keyboard right now, debating whether to write any more. No one listens to me about this. I’m not sure why, unless it’s because I’m not famous, or I’m not some millionaire in the papers.
Hell, most people have never heard of me.
But my bills get paid.
My lights are still on.
…and I LOVE my work, my readers…and my life.
*sigh*
Here’s the boring version.
My books do not roar.
They trickle.
And a trickle, it turns out, is probably the most powerful thing a writer can learn to build.

I don’t believe blueprints work for us, when it comes to creatives.
We’re all so very different…in temperament, endurance, capacity, perspectives, determination and the list goes on. So I’m going to share PRINCIPLES with you.
The basic things that WILL work,…but YOU have to apply them in YOUR way, according to YOUR circumstances.
