Breakfast with Brothers

pancakes 300x186 Breakfast with BrothersAs a community, we come together on Sundays and occasionally during the week, but do we really know each other? If something happened to any one of us, would the rest of know how best to be of service to your family? I’m posting this on for the public to see in the hopes of encouraging others to create a similar event in their own home town, to build relationships between the men of a community, to open lines of communication and to strengthen friendships.

Breakfast with Brothers was started in December 2009, in a week of depression. The month was rough, the year a certain low point of my life and in an effort to brighten my own day, I asked a few men I knew little about and just asked if I could cook them breakfast at our church.  A few thought I was a nutter, but a couple brother were touched by the offer and agreed. We met at 7am in the morning with a few basic rules:

  • Must be an Elder.
  • No women.
  • No kids.
  • No stress.

I cooked, we ate and laughed for hours. those who could stay longer did, those who had to leave for work or other projects were free to do so. The aim was to simply talk, laugh and get to know one another better over some decent food, and it was a success. In fact it went so well, we did it the next month, then the next. The numbers grow and we now have food assignments because there are too many to feed–but it’s doing what i hoped it would: giving support and hope to men who just find themselves feeling alone in a crappy stage of life right now.

It’s an opportunity to get together and truly make new friends and create bonds.
